CHAPTER TWELVE
Aidan wandered out to the barn and grabbed the brush to curry his horse. If everything Riley said was true, there had been nothing that would have kept Sean at home. Still, if he'd made his peace with his brother, Sean would have told the family about his marriage and baby.
After they argued, Sean had walked out of the house. From the moment Sean left, Aidan wanted to say he was sorry for the terrible things he'd said. Although he'd regretted his behavior, his pride kept him from going after Sean to apologize.
Aidan stroked the brush over Artemis. He hoped some physical labor would ease the pain and regret humming through his veins. Maybe he'd clean the stallsâagain.
Hours later, an exhausted Aidan returned to the house. "Hattie, what's for dinner? I'm starving."
"I made one of your favorites, chicken pot pie, and apple dumplings for dessert."
He put an arm around the housekeeper. "You're an angel."
"And you stink." Hattie wrinkled her nose. "Go shower, and then you can eat."
After he ate, Aidan stopped at Riley's room. The television was still on, but she was asleep. He found the remote and turned off the TV then stood looking at her. She laid on her left side with a hand curled under her chin, and her legs were pulled up toward her belly as though she protected her baby.
The day she'd walked into the diner, her skin had been pale, and her hair was dull. She'd looked tired, with the life drained from her. Now, she looked healthier, rested. She'd gained weight, and her skin had more color. Too bad it wasn't enough.
Aidan turned off the lamp on her nightstand and went to his office.
After starting his computer, Aidan searched for information about preeclampsia. The more he learned, the deeper his frown became. As Riley said, the only cure for the condition was giving birth, but for the baby to survive, she had to be at least thirty-seven weeks into her pregnancy.
With Riley at thirty-three weeks, if she gave birth now, the child might not survive. Total bedrest could increase the odds of the baby's and Riley's survival.
She must be terrified, maybe feeling guilty. Hattie told him that Riley had locked herself in her bedroom, and she'd heard Riley sobbing. A half-hour later, Hattie had gone in and talked to her, but she wouldn't tell him what they'd discussed.
Aidan needed to do something to make Riley feel better. He wanted her to accept the farm as her home. But first, Aidan had to show Riley he was a man she could rely upon, the man she needed.
It was past midnight when Aidan turned his computer off. On his way to bed, he looked in on Riley. She appeared to be resting comfortably, but he'd leave his door open in case she called out during the night.
